The Resurgence of Girl Groups: Atlanta Edition

Music goes through transitions. There are distinct periods when certain styles dominated the charts including disco in the mid-1970s and Pop music in the 1980s. Typically when certain styles go out of fashion rarely do they make a major comeback.

This isn’t true for all, but it is for most. There was a period when girl groups dominated the market including the likes of Xscape, En Vogue, SWV, The Spice Girls and Destiny’s Child. These ladies were the epitome of “girl power” as they sang about female empowerment, independence, and self-sureness.

Since the mid-2000s female groups have up and disappeared for the most part. Every once in a while you’ll see a new group pop up, but seldom do they have stating power with the exception of Fifth Harmony. The silence we’ve seen from girl groups in recent years is about to change as we’re on the brink of a resurgence.

Whether it’s Kelly Rowland developing the next big girl group through her BET reality series Chasing Destiny, music has seen a upswing in the focus on female vocal groups. Atlanta is one of the most musically gifted cities in the country, so it’s only right we take a look at the ladies of A.T.L. leading the pack in our “The Resurgence of The Girl Groups” music series.
