British rapper Speech Debelle reveals new single + visual ‘Atlantis’ and reveals new album details

Off the back of recent single ‘Away From Here’ featuring Baby Sol, Mercury Prize-winning British rapper Speech Debelle reveals new single + visual ‘Atlantis’, an elegant and soulful slice of alternative hip-hop and Ancestral Rap, released 14 October, and details of her new album ‘Sunday Dinner on a Monday’, released in 2023.

Atlantis explores connections to ancestry and is released alongside a music video exploring an atmospheric and psychedelic underwater world. The visual is a collaboration with multimedia artist Tupac Martir, whose work spans the fields of lighting, projection and video, sound design, music, and composition.

Speech Debelle says of the single:

“What if the lost city of Atlantis is real, and we have just learnt to breathe underwater? What if this is all just different forms of water? The atmosphere, the oceans, the universe, us. If that were true, then perhaps we are an advanced civilisation and later civilisations will find remnants of our lives and praise us. We are the ones we need.”

The release is accompanied by an official ‘Sweetiano’ remix from Scratchclart. the London-based producer and DJ also known as Scratcha DVA, released 28 October.

Celebrated for her ability to articulate a vulnerable honesty in contrast to her husky tones, Speech gives some hints on what to expect from her highly-anticipated fourth album, and it’s unsurprising that the self-confessed food-lover (a semi-finalist on Celebrity Masterchef, cookbook writer, and podcaster) has been influenced by the connection, comfort and culture that food allows us to explore. The South London lyricist says of the title: “On a Monday, the Sunday dinner just tastes sweeter, everything has time to marinate and settle.”

Featuring the singles ‘Atlantis’ and ‘Away from Here’, ‘Sunday Dinner On A Monday’ is an examination of family, friends, lineage, and ancestral DNA, through the lens of afro-futurism. “It’s about how we imagine and then create our own futures”, says Speech.

“The album is about our journey through life, as we learn from experiences that expand our senses. We learn internal management and get closer to ease. Some of us even become nourished, like a good meal. This is THAT album.”

‘Sunday Dinner On A Monday’ has been mixed and mastered by Grammy-nominated and MOBO award-winning mixer and engineer Clinton McCreery (Enny, Kofi Stone, Manik MC), with writing and production from Skripture (Will.i.am, Gregory Porter, Basement Jaxx), and collaborations with Dem Drums, Jamaican production team Island Wav, Kensaye, and Mark Cake. It includes features from English contemporary pianist and composer Neil Cowley (Adele, Emeli Sande, Maribou State), Miss Baby Sol, Dylema, Alyesha Lei and Ruth Sax.

‘Atlantis’ is available now via all major platforms.
