Meet Singer & Composer, Alice Sonia-Michael

Being highly passionate about music, Alice Sonia-Michael began her career as a singer in 2010 and 2 years later she started playing guitar as a self-taught.

Having never considered any particular recipe for her music, she is interested in creating something beautiful that sends a message to the world.

She is a strong believer that, if you work creatively, the whole universe works with you, so there is no way you can fail. Intrigued by her words, we asked Alice to sit down and tell us a bit more about herself and her musical career.

What inspired you to begin a career in music?

I remember that since I was a child, I have had a very clear image about what I wanted to become; I wanted to become an extraordinary artist. This desire has been the most important “engine” for the motivation to fulfill my dreams.

In 2012, you began playing the guitar as a self-taught musician, what set of tactics did you employ to be able to learn, effectively, on your own?

I have never thought about special tactics to learn how to play the guitar. However, it is true that I have applied the most important tactics in the world, namely, the “Keep going” tactics. I think this is the most certain path for reaching any goal.

Who are your biggest musical influences?

The greatest artists in the world represented my “music school”. Artists like Jeff Beck, David Bowie, Prince, Roisin Murphy, Joni Mitchell, Freddie Mercury,Laurie Anderson, Tina Turner, Pat Matheny and many others have taught me that we all have the right to express ourselves freely and if we do so, then we will shine.

I want to talk separately about the one who has influenced me enormously and who will always inspire me; Michael Jackson is the major source of inspiration for any musician, irrespective of the genre- jazz, funk, pop, classical, etc.

Very few people will be born with such a huge interest in music, with that tremendous precision for rhythm, with visions that have completely changed our world and with a great love for people. He has been and will continue to be a Maestro for me and for millions of people, I think.

You’ve expressed your desire to write music that contains that ‘special thing we call beauty.’ Describe what that sounds like to you.

It is true that none of us can describe the beauty, but we all acknowledge it when we encounter it. Beauty is a thing of magic. So, I myself cannot describe “ that special thing we call beauty” , but I can feel it and I pray to God to make me feel it in all my songs.

In four years of playing music, what is the biggest thing you’ve learned about yourself?

I’m not saying that learning how to play an instrument is easy, especially when you start to study and you realize you cannot focus. This used to happen to me in the beginning. It was interesting to find out that I could not focus, but this ability has been developed in time.

And the most important thing that I’ve learned about myself is that I have the capacity to make it.

Everyone experiences good days and bad days, as a musician, when you have a bad day, what motivates you to keep moving and look ahead to the future?

An important verse from my debut single ‘Seconds of Silence’ says: ‘There is no good or bad, just your mind chooses sides, Hold your thinking! .’ This verse is like a mantra and when it was written I needed it so much! Throughout my life it has been shown to me that what I called a ‘bad day’ was actually a great one from which I have learned a lot of things. What motivates me to go on is my love for people.

Everything I do, I do for them. It gives me great joy to have the chance to prepare everything for them. At the moment I’m rehearsing and preparing for my future live performances and I always imagine that I will impress people and they will be delighted by what they‘ll see and hear.

Throughout your musical career, have you experienced any ‘wow’ moments? Those moments that you stop to reflect and can’t believe you are where you are?

Yes, of course! These moments occur when I write a great song , when I give a wonderful performance or when I hear applause.

In regards to your goals and milestones, what would be the first thing to happen that truly let you know you were headed in the right direction to reach your musical dreams?

It is all happening already! The fact that I manage to gradually accomplish everything I have planned shows me that my dreams have already started to come true.

In your own opinion, what is the most meaningful song you wrote? What makes you say that one?

I live guided by the realisation that God writes music through me and I am an important channel through which Divinity fulfills its plans. This is why all my songs complete me and are important.

What does the foreseeable future hold for you as an artist?

Nothing is foreseeable, (laughs) What I know for sure, is that my dream has taken shape and like Plato said, ‘The beginning is the most important part of the work.’
