UK songstress Espa unveils new sound on her latest release ‘Lover to a Liar’

Espa, one of the most remarkable and innovative breakout stars of the past year returns with a new, bigger sound crafted with the influence and direction of legendary musicians such as Linda Perry.

Growing up studying and making music with friends Kwabs & Nao, Espa’s initial entrance into music saw her bringing an icy R&B sound and EP, culminating in a release with UK rapper Giggs with ‘Swan Song’ and garnering critical acclaim across the tastemaker spectrum including HUNGER, i-D and WONDERLAND. Radio support also came courtesy of plays from BBC R1Xtra (playlist) and BBC R1 (Annie Mac).

Now Espa unveils her new sound following one of the biggest cult features of the year, as the vocalist on UK producer Goldie’s ‘Inner City Life’ 2017 Burial Remix; one of the most coveted records of 2017. “Lover to a Liar” is Espa’s long-awaited return to making music.

The vocal that drew such instant acclaim now wraps its powerful form around an ambitious pop sound that’s clearly been informed by a more epic, mainstream landscape. Working with Grammy-nominated Perry – a songwriter with the likes Adele, Gwen Stefani and Christina Aguilera – will do that to your horizons.

“Lover to a Liar” immediately hits with the kind of evocative and urgent melody that places her in the realms of Haim or Stevie Nicks. Flecked through with charisma and the kind of innate power that caused such immediate hype, Espa’s return is an exciting, stylish and exhilarating pointer to what comes next for the young Londoner.

Speaking on the track, Espa states: “This song has been a release for many reasons. I finally gave myself permission to write in a style that is fearless and boundless, it’s pop and its dramatic and that is me, which is as freeing as it is refreshing to finally say! My lyrical content always comes from personal experiences and in the case of ‘Lover To a Liar’, it took a while to pull the subject off the ‘too real to put into a song yet’ list… but music is the most powerful vehicle, and I’ve expressed exactly what has been buried for years.”
