Firstly who is M9?
My names M9. I am an aspiring artist that mainly does rap. Before music friends used to call me “Money Mitch” for various reasons but also in reference to the film “Paid in full” which used to be my favourite movie. Money Mitch sounded too common so I decided to combine the “M” with the largest single digit I can think of which resulted in the name “M9”. It also holds different other meanings that I rather keep to myself just in case you don’t find the first one interesting.
When did you first realise you wanted to take music seriously?
I made a poor quality track last year with a few friends and surprisingly people loved it. Selenks (one of the artist’s I’ve been recording with recently) also heard it and he urged me to take it seriously. Since then he’s been dragging me to different studios and it eventually became a hobby.
Is there anyone in the music scene that inspires you?
My inspiration doesn’t come from the music scene because personally I don’t listen to a lot of music. In fact I only get to hear the new stuff when I’m with friends. All the albums and mixtapes on my phone are all old material from various artists. I find it exhausting trying to stay up to date with what’s new but I think a lot of artists are doing really well. Apart from that I rather spend time making my own music than listening to everyone else’s.
Are you working on any new music that we should be looking out for?
I have just released the visuals for my new single ‘Favours’ featuring Selenks. I’ve also got an EP coming out in early 2018. It could even be a mixtape as I have so many unreleased tracks that I want to put on it.
Have you done any live performances?
I’ve had to turn down a few because I’m not a fan of being in the spotlight, hence why I wear a mask now. Apart from that I think I’ve only performed once or twice in local clubs. The atmosphere was great in my recollection so I promise I will start getting involved in live performances and shows next year 2018.
Who is M9 listening to at the moment?
I like rappers like Gunna Dee, Dave and Potter Payper because their bars hold meaning and their choice of words makes me think about life and its usually things I can relate to on an emotional level. It’s not just the usual basic, catchy or hyped up bars that everyone else drops.
Where can we listen to your music?
You can find me on all the major streaming sites: YouTube, Apple, Spotify, Android Music and SoundCloud.
Where do you see yourself in 5 Years?
Hopefully somewhere that I can stand and say to myself “Yeah these 5 years of hard work have been worth it”. God willing of course.
Any last words?
Big up everyone that has been pushing my music. Friends and family who’s got their faith in me and my music and shout out to Ebony Williams and Niji Magazine as well, for going out of her way and showing me support.
