South African artist Julia Church draws from a DIY-driven ambition which she textures with interwoven honeyed vocals that flourishes on every new release. ‘Crawl’ showcases Julia’s dedication to storytelling, embodying a burdening relationship with the compelling responsibility of a shared history that she’s not ready to let go of. The track gradually builds in depth succumbing to Julia’s richly layered production, echoing the developing emotional confusion as she clings to the hope of saving their love.
Speaking on the track Julia Church says:
“Crawl is my third single, which I produced with the super talented Ben De Vries. It’s an older one that I wrote at uni, while in quite a toxic relationship. It’s basically about being a rock to someone who is struggling and how it was so often at the cost of my own well-being.”
Talented as both a songwriter and a producer, Julia recently graduated from the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts where she worked on a one-on-one songwriting session with Sir Paul McCartney. Growing up with her family in Durban, Julia was raised on Nora Jones and Joni Mitchell while later idolising the likes of James Vincent McMorrow and Jamie Woon both for their musical capabilities as well as their production.
Julia’s introduction to the industry saw her feature on a number of international dance hits which garnered millions of plays at the age of 17, while performing on global stages. Charting twice on the South African Radio Charts, at number 2 (“Something New” – Crazy White Boy ft.
Julia Church) and number 6 (“Heart Shaped Box” – Goldfish ft. Julia Church).
Julia’s cult following has seen her gain over 1.5million plays on just her Soundcloud covers. Whilst amassing over 50million streams writing for others, ready to now announce herself into the music scene on her own multi-talented accord.
Julia Church blends the craft of electronic production with real instrumentation, all tipped with the ethereal vocals that together create the emblematic sound she embodies. With her debut album set for release later this year, get ready to hear a lot more from Julia Church in 2019.
