With the success of her stirring debut single “What A Lovely Day” putting her firmly in the spotlight, soulful newcomer Odette Peters follows up with the brand-new single “Lose My Mind”.
Already making a name for herself with her jazz and neo-soul musical blend, this new release is Odette in her element. Writing and recording with the likes of Charles Watson (Slow Club) and Maths Time Joy, this new musical offering is co-written and co-produced by Odette, Charles Watson and Robert Jones. Smooth production entices from the onset, brilliantly complimented with captivating vocal performance from Peters herself. “Lose My Mind” speaks to the role of women in patriarchy. Inspired by the story of a young professional, Odette’s words embody empowerment and solidarity amongst women navigating such spaces.
Going into further detail, Odette shared:
“I wrote the lyrics for ‘Lose My Mind’ after I’d overheard a conversation about a young woman who had entered a very male-dominated work place and found the only person who she felt really didn’t want her to move up through the company and succeed was in fact another woman. The woman in question was older and higher up the company in a superior roll in the business who obviously saw this young woman entering the company as a threat.”
“In a system where women currently make up approximately half of entry-level employees but only 22% of leadership and executive roles, a statistic even more abysmal for women of colour, it makes no sense at all to put down other women rather than support them. This woman should have been competing to make space for other women in high-paying roles in her company rather than competing against another woman – she didn’t see who the true enemy was.”
First aspiring to be a poet, Odette was just 13 when she started to explore words in a more musical manner. Raised in an all-female household on a diet of Nina Simone and Diana Ross, the Manchester-born artist was just 16 when she decided to pursue music seriously, leaving her hometown to take up a place at London’s ‘The Purcell Music School’. Initially training in classical music, it was towards the end of her time at school that Odette discovered a love for jazz and neo-soul, a genre better suited to her lyrical expression and creativity. With smoky and powerful vocals featuring an incredible range benefitting from classical training, Odette is now fully immersed in the current jazz and neo-soul movement.
Now 22-years old, she hasn’t stopped writing, performing and unreservedly involving herself in every aspect of the creative process. With a unique self-styled image that is clearly defined, as well as enduring vocal ability, this burgeoning yet assured young artist is fully cognizant of what she wants to say to the world and how to say it.
‘Lose My Mind’ is available now from all major platforms.
