What inspired you to begin a career in music?
Music was my first love and expression. I can still remember myself writing melodies and lyrics since I was a kid. Always imagining the day I will be on a big stage. There are certain things I cannot always vocalize in my day to day life, but music helps me articulate what I feel.
What differs you and your sound from other upcoming artists in the music industry?
I experiment with my sound a lot, and I draw inspiration from pop, R&B, electro music and thus I don’t think my music is in any one particular genre. What I love about music and songwriting is that my sound and style evolves as I evolve. That is very important to me – to keep making progress.
I certainly think that some of my songs can be classified as my poetry as I do pay a lot of attention to storytelling when I write my lyrics. Overall, my sound is my personality – dreamy, poetic, vivid, romantic, honest, dedicated and energetic. As we all are different in our own ways, so I guess I’m unique in my own way as well.
Everyone experiences good days and bad days, as a musician, when you have a bad day, what motivates you to keep moving and look ahead to the future?
I just focus on making music and having a genuine voice. I’d still keep doing it no matter what, and I think that’s the key. I try my best to not let anything come in the way – bad days shouldn’t overshadow good days and music makes me truly happy in the end anyway. Once you realise that only you are in control of making your dreams happen – everything else starts making more sense and falls into place.
Throughout your musical career, have you experienced any ‘wow’ moments? Those moments that you stop to reflect and can’t believe are where you are?
Yes, absolutely. I love those moments when you rewind and go back to the day when you didn’t even know how to properly write a song and then as time went by, I found myself in the studio or working on projects with people who’ve achieved so much and written for well-established and talented artists.
For me, it’s a wow moment every time a song you have been working on, comes to life, gets released and I hear from people who loved it. It’s so important for me to remember where you started but also always stay hungry for more and keep pushing.
Your latest release ‘Can’t Quit’ is out now, can you please describe the creative process and the concept behind the single?
I wrote “Can’t Quit” about this intense connection with someone which is beautiful but also so overpowering that you feel helpless sometimes. The song is a collaboration with a London-based producer J.AR.J. We had a studio session arranged and I came in with this chorus/hook idea written on my way to the studio, recorded as a voice memo. We took that as a starting point and wrote the whole track really fast.
The song is about this massive dopamine rush – this overwhelming feeling you experience when you are just mad for someone. The attachment is so intense and deep that you can’t shake it off even if you want to. Although all of us are different in our emotional intensity, I’m one of those people who either feel a lot or nothing at all. Can’t Quit is all about that.
What artist / artists would you like to work with in the future? Are there any collaborations coming up anytime soon?
I am lucky to be working with some very gifted artists, and I want 2020 to be a year where I expand my horizons in terms of new collaborations in music. There are so many artists I’d love to collaborate with one day – SIA, Max Martin, Pharrell, Post Malone, The Weeknd and the list goes on 🙂
In your own opinion, what is the most meaningful song you wrote? What makes you say that one?
All my songs mean a lot to me and usually, that’s a reflection of what I’m living at a time in my life or have experienced. Those are all moments I cherish and keep close to my heart. I don’t think there is one song I’d say is the most meaningful song – I’d hope the first album I will release will speak for itself.
What personal advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue this career?
Do it if you’re ready to sacrifice for it, work hard for it and sometimes you will have to take some walks alone on your journey but if you love it you won’t regret any moment of it.
Never let anyone make you feel like what you’re doing isn’t good enough. You won’t always find the support that you need, and you might feel like giving up a hundred times but try to become that support for yourself and find strength in the love for music. Just focus on creating music and no one can stop you.
What does the foreseeable future hold for you as an artist?
I will be releasing more music at the beginning of 2020 and the next year will definitely be full of music and new surprises, more details coming soon.
Anything else you would like to add?
Thanks to all of you for the support on my new single ‘Can’t Quit’, and a special thanks to my producer J.AR.J. Keep streaming it and feel free to connect with me. x
