Encapsulating the early stages of romance: ‘Be the One’ is the latest release from rising R&B singer-songwriter Yas VW

Gliding off the back of her mesmerising sophomore single ‘Off the Ground’, South London sweetheart Yas VW unveils her latest slice of dreamscape with ‘Be the One’.

Driven by her delectable vocals and honeyed alt-pop textures, this new-age love song presents the young artist wearing her heart on her sleeve. ‘Be the One’ possesses a fresh yet nostalgic flair, cushioned by ‘80s synths and a hypnotic drum pulse.

Accompanied by a stunning music video directed by Reece Selvadorai, the visuals for “Be the One” beautifully encapsulate the early stages of romance and simultaneously provides a taste of early ‘00s reminiscence.

Sharing her thoughts on ‘Be the One’, Yas VW explained: “Be the One is a reminder that true love can be achieved. The guy that I’ve fallen for has lost hope that he’ll ever find that one person that he can experience the thrill of passion with. Searching but failing to find the one that can do this for him, he doesn’t realise that I’m right there under his nose the whole time, waiting for him to notice me. In this song, I am reminding him that if he takes a chance on me, he’ll experience that real love that he’s been craving. It may not be an easy journey, it may take time to reach a completely smooth ride of love, but once we get there it will be so worth it.”

Born Yasmin Vaughan-Williams, the 21-year-old singer-songstress hails from a musical home and attributes her sound to her early exposure to ‘80s and ‘90s R&B. With a grandfather playing for a band in Ghana, picking up guitar and piano at a tender age was second nature for the bright-eyed artist.

Her previous singles ‘Off the Ground’ and ‘Weakness’ have collected nearly 200K streams on Spotify alone, whilst garnering support across Dummy, New Wave Magazine, The Blues Project and placements on Spotify key editorial playlists including R&B UK and This Is How We Do. Her slick sounds have also already caught the attention of BBC Radio 1, achieving spins from Rickie, Melvin and Charlie.

Describing herself as “Jhené Aiko meets a young Janet Jackson”, this British R&B newcomer is looking towards a breakout year in 2021 – stay tuned for the plentiful delights Yas VW has up her sleeve and expect to see her rise up the ranks of the British music scene.

‘Be the One’ is available now via all major platforms.
