Small World is the new single from Swiss rapper Crispthecook and Birmingham-based UK hip-hop lyricist and producer Sonnyjim.

Sonnyjim has been on a roll lately, producing and collaborating with much-lauded American rapper Homeboy Sandman. Now, he turns his attention to hip-hop wonder Crispthecook, an emerging artist who has seen growing demand in countries, including the UK, the Netherlands, and, of course, his home nation of Switzerland.

Small World is a reflective track produced by UK producer GG Peney, known for his work with legendary rappers Melanin 9 and Jehst. It’s an introspective note on the perception of legacy, and the “emotional cost” of the effects of a superficial world.

The collaboration took shape following a mutual respect between the two rappers, and this admiration led to a rough demo of a beat by GG Peney to which Sonnyjim reciprocated almost immediately with a verse of his own, catalysing a formidable partnership. Crisp said of the result: “His tone and delivery added that extra layer the track needed — it was an effortless synergy,” and asks us to specifically “pay attention to the layers in the production.”

Showcasing agile modes of complex rhyme schemes, the listener’s journey is heightened by a minimalist delivery. The chorus’s soft and cotton-like demure is deliberate, one the rap artists say is “minimalist but heavy”, leaving “space for reflection”.

Through a strikingly potent cadence and modest delivery, both Crispthecook and Sonnyjim convey a unique approach, delivering a hardened message through an avant-garde performance. The partners-in-rhyme inflict a meditative lyrical and compositional experience, one that Crisp says carries a message: “It’s not just a song, it’s a statement.”

Small World is available now through Life Long Records and will be accompanied by a music video.
