Joel Quadri

Joel Quadri is an Afro/RnB artist from South London. With multiple influences ranging from Michael Jackson, Chris Brown, J Hus and Justin Timberlake, his ability to masterfully produce catchy and diverse melodies are a testament to his talent and more importantly his songwriting capabilities. He is comparable to the above listed, but he makes sure he stays fresh and distinctive in order to stand out and make his name known

What or who inspired you to begin a career in music?

I have so many inspirations when it comes to music that are too many to even name. But the first artist that really made me believe in being an artist and dancer was the king of pop himself (Michael Jackson). I started imitating MJ from a very young age between 5 and 8. Then from there, my love for music just grew and I began to expand my knowledge of music.

What differs you and your sound from other artists in the music industry?

I feel there is a real lack in the UK music industry for a male POC artist that is able to successfully fuse the sounds that I use. My music has a range of different genres blending into one, from Pop, to R&B, Afro and even hip hop.

Your latest release ‘No Way’ ft. JustMoh is out now. Can you please describe the creative process and inspiration behind the project?

‘No way’ was actually an easy release to put together. It all started with JustMoh sending me some beats to have a listen to and the beat for ‘No way’ immediately stood out to me. It has a bounce to it, a fun feel. It also had a hint of a mid 2000’s vibe to it. I freestyled the first couple lines of the chorus and built the chorus and concept around that. As the instrumental had a fun feel and a bounce to it, I tried to make sure the lyrics were matching that same energy. Then of course, JustMoh, graced the track with his effortless delivery, flow and lyrics for his verse.

Throughout your musical career, have you experienced any ‘wow’ moments?

I wouldn’t say I have experienced any ‘wow’ moments throughout my career. Although the recording session and the reception I have received for ‘No Way’ have come close. I also really enjoy when I get to see my favourite artists perform live.

What personal advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue this career?

The advice I would give to someone wanting to pursue a music career is to make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons. Some people are doing it for the right reasons, yet the industry can change them in a negative way, so imagine someone who’s in it for the wrong reasons. You have to do it for the love of the art and you have to try to not lose sight of that or else everything around you may consume you.
