Nellie Charles

Coming off the heels of the success of her last single ‘Boss’, which was recently crowned BBC 1Xtra ‘Track of the Week’, and championed by BBC Radio 1, KISS FM, and Capital Xtra, among others, while also garnering critical acclaim from the likes of Notion Magazine, Earmilk, Wordplay Magazine, Ones To Watch, and Apple Music, Manchester-based UK R&B rising sensation Nellie Charles returns with a sultry new offering titled ‘Rain On Me’.

Out now via Chocolate Love Monkey and Melody Mover, ‘Rain On Me’ is the second single from Nellie Charles’ highly anticipated debut EP arriving in the summer. ‘Rain On Me’ not only continues the momentum from her previous single ‘Boss’, but also showcases Nellie Charles’ evolving artistry and deepening emotional depth.

What or who inspired you to embark on a career in music?

Listening to and being influenced by other artists played a significant role, but apart from that, my friends and family truly encouraged me to take music seriously. They helped me realise that I could pursue it as a career.

How does your sound differ from other artists in the music industry?

Honestly, I don’t focus too much on comparisons. I simply want my voice to be heard, my lyrics to resonate, and my uniqueness to be evident.

Your latest release, ‘Rain on Me’, is now available on all major platforms. Could you describe the creative process and inspiration behind the project and the accompanying video?

When I first heard the beat, I instantly fell in love with it, but I had no idea what the song should be about. I had never really tried freestyling before, and since I was struggling, I thought it was the perfect time to experiment. I started the song spontaneously and kept building on it over time, channeling my emotions and thoughts to see where it led. Regarding the video, it’s a narrative of a girl meeting a boy, falling out of love with him, and eventually wanting nothing to do with him. I think my video director, Blueboredom, really brought that storyline to life.

In your opinion, what is the most meaningful song you have written? What makes you feel that way?

They all hold significance for me. It’s a real rollercoaster of emotions, and it was incredibly challenging to choose the lead single and the follow-up tracks – like asking a mother to pick her favourite child. I believe the EP should be experienced as a whole because each song on it feels equally important to me.

How do you manage the balance between artistic expression and connecting with your audience?

I’m quite reserved and still acclimatising to performing, especially my own music. I want the audience to hear my lyrics distinctly and connect with me through them.

Could you share a memorable or defining moment in your career so far?

Performing at Glastonbury, even though it was before I released my own music, was truly memorable. Being invited to return meant a great deal to me and reinforced my desire to pursue a career in music.

What does the foreseeable future hold for you as an artist?

I plan to continue writing music and performing, and I hope to collaborate with some of the artists I admire.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

My next single, ‘Sounds Like I Care’, will be released on Chocolate Love Monkey through Melody Mover at the end of the summer.

‘Rain On Me’ is available now via all major platforms.
