“The Aim of our Young Designer Awards and its related events is to increase the number and visibility of young and exceptionally gifted multi-cultural designers and to encourage them to reach their true potential, by rewarding those who excelled both creatively and academically.” – Joanna Marcella (Director of the FDC Young Designer Awards and the FDC Collections Showcase)
Why did you decide to choose fashion designing as a career?
Fashion design has always been a passion of mine ever since I was four and could hold a pencil. Growing up I was inspired by my mothers evening wear dresses, I would just sit in front of her wardrobe and draw. It’s my go to place when I need some escapism from school, fashion designing is clearly in my blood and I love it.
What according to you is a favourite part of being a designer?
I like seeing my creations come to life, from sketching them to choosing the fabrics and working with my team to get to the finished design ready for catwalk or sale. Although I had great delight in making the 1920s dress for the FDC I took a lot of tutorial advice, it came out well – so overall a really good learning curve and I picked up a number of new skills along the way.
Who or what inspired your creations?
I am heavily inspired by Ralph & Russo. I love the intricacy of their work, which is definitely something I can relate to in my designs.
What skills according to you are necessary for a successful designer?
You need to have an avid eye, a flare for design and attention to detail. I personally read Vogue and keep up to speed with what other designers are doing by researching through Google and social media. I like look to see what is trending colour and style wise. I also try to keep on top of the fashion forecast for the next few years.
What advice would you give to someone looking to pursue a career in fashion?
Never give up on your dreams, never give up on your ideas, never accept a no and always believe in yourself because what you think, you can create!
How would you describe your personal style?
I’m very classic in my tailoring and the items I like to wear – I like simplicity.
Where do you see yourself in the next ten years?
I see myself in 10 years being a household name like Alexander McQueen or Chanel. My aim is to be seen showcasing in all the major fashion capitals of the world along with having my first store. I would love my clothes to grace every red carpet event and every award ceremony. I’m determined to make ‘josh’ a global brand.
