Rising UK rap artist Dex Man talks musical influences, individuality and the concept/inspiration behind his latest release ‘So Deep’

What inspired you to begin a career in music?

When I was 11 I bought 50 Cents album ‘Get Rich Or Die Tryin’ burned it onto a cassette player and every morning I used to play it on the bus on the way to school and zone out. Then I started writing lyrics over his songs and thought yeah this is what I want to do and over time I started getting instrumentals and started writing and making music. A few older artists in the area also inspired me to make music such as Roadside G’s and PDC. When I was growing up they inspired Kidd people in south facts.

What differs you and your sound from other rap artists in the music industry?

I wouldn’t say I’m totally different but I don’t like doing music that everyone is doing I like to separate myself. For example I can do any genre if I like the instrumental I’ll make a track to it. Everyone is doing drill right now so I tell every producer that sends me material to always make the drill different add a different element to it! This makes me flow different on the drill beat so I’ll automatically stand out and sound different! That’s the kind of artist I am.

Your latest release ‘So Deep’ is out now! Can you please describe the creative process and the concept/inspiration behind the visuals and the track?

“So Deep” just came about, I didn’t even think it would turn out like this. I basically was on Instagram and I heard an instrumental online by Sam Cliffe. I was like cool I like what I hear and asked for a pack, if I remember. He sent me a few instrumentals and I liked “So Deep”. I heard the beat and told him it’s cool but I need it to be more emotional not like the typical drill beats you hear. He sent it back to me and straight away I was blown away, I said to myself this can’t be just a normal track, I need to challenge myself let me make a story. A fictional story that happens far too often and the lyrics came to me. I don’t know how they just came. I finished writing within the hour rang my engineer and said I need to come and lay this and that was it. In regards to the video my partner and video director Jake just done his thing, I basically wrote the track with him in mind so he shot the video according to the lyrics, was so smooth.

Throughout your musical career, have you experienced any ‘wow’ moments? Those moments that you stop to reflect and can’t believe you are where you are?

To be honest I never really had a wow moment yet I don’t think I’ve achieved enough yet. I always say to myself I need to do more, that wow moment isn’t here yet for me but I feel it coming! The energy levels are right for me now.

Everyone experiences good days and bad days. As an artist, when you have a bad day, what motivates you to keep moving and look ahead to the future?

My life motto is no matter how bad my day is going it will never remain this way so I always keep positive. I just think to myself keep pushing if I stop now or let bad days affect me I’ll be stuck in the same position and I’ll never progress in my music.

What personal advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue this career?

Just do it. Don’t wait on someone to give you approval, chase your dreams and try to get in the the studio and work on your craft. We all been there in the beginning, that way you won’t have no regrets at least you know you tried.

What does the foreseeable future hold for you as an artist?

I just want to be the best artist I can be. I’m working on a new EP and a few things I can’t say yet but just know my face will be everywhere soon.

‘So Deep’ is available now via all major platforms.
