What inspired you to begin a career in music?
I don’t really see myself as “beginning” anything to be totally honest. Music , the creative of it, the love for it – it’s something that has always been a part of me. I’m just waking up everyday choosing to do things that I love. Sometimes that manifests into writing a song, sometimes that manifests into releasing that song etc…
What differs you and your sound from other upcoming artists in the music industry?
I try and keep my sound as honest as possible. In the sense where I don’t go into the studio thinking about the finished product or how people receive it or how well does this fit into what’s currently getting radio play. My “formula” is really just making music that feels good to me at that time.
Your new dual single ‘Is It Me, Hennessy?’ is out now. Can you please describe the creative process and inspiration behind the project?
Though I’m young in age, I’m very much an old school head. I had sent the original production demo I made to the producer that worked with me on this [Wilkenson].
After some back and fourth between different versions, I had an idea to create two versions like a vinyl. I loved exploring the versatility.
Everyone experiences good days and bad days. As an artist, when you have a bad day what motivates you to keep moving forward and looking ahead to the future?
Hard days are just that, hard. For me personally, there was a period of time where I was experiencing something heavy…I remember just doodling words, phrases and images all the time. Words that were what I wanted to feel; peace, resilience, limitless etc..I think it’s really important to have your own personal reminders.
You recently performed a live acoustic set for the Jam Sessions on Westside Radio. How was the experience? How did it feel to be their first live act since the lifting of COVID restrictions?
It was such a full circle experience for me not only for them having their first live act after COVID, but in particular for me because it’s a station I grew up listening to everyday. So for me it was more than just “great, you’re on radio” it was beautifully personal.
In your own opinion, what is the most meaningful song you wrote? What makes you say that one?
“Still I See (Blu Skies)” definitely. I’ll go into details with any listeners of mine one day but yeah, this song was written and was just an honest expression of a certain time in my life. Releasing the song felt like freedom really.
What personal advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue this career?
I just feel like dedicating your days to learning who you are, through all your changes etc will crossover throughout everything you do. There’s times when we don’t know or haven’t recently reminded ourselves of who we are so it’s easier to get swayed and delayed through other people’s wants of you. When we are conscious of who we are, we can find stability in that.
What does the foreseeable future hold for you as an artist?
Making more music for sure. Music that feels good. Music that feels honest. Creating as a whole.
Anything else you would like to add?
I would like to thank The Jam Sessions on Westside Radio and Niji Magazine for allowing such a memorable moment to cross paths for me.
‘Is It Me, Hennessy?’ is available now via Spotify, Apple Music and all major platforms.
