What inspired you to begin a career in music?

I was inspired to sing from a young age. My first album was Beyoncé ‘Dangerously in Love’ which I’d listen to on a CD player all day and sing. I wrote songs from a young age about heartbreak that I’d never even been through. I always wanted to perform and sing.

What differs you and your sound from other upcoming Alternative R&B artist in the music industry?

What makes me unique is my lived experience. I have personal thoughts and ideologies to share through my music. My sound is still a work in progress, as I’m only just getting started in recent years. My sound is original due to my multiple influences, from alternative rock, R&B and Soul and some elements of orchestra. I feel I am very adaptable to different instrumentals, so my music style may keep adapting until I find what suits me the best.

Your latest single ‘Love from E8’ is out now. Please describe the creative process and inspiration behind the release?

I wrote the track at a time when I was contemplating what love I really wanted in my life, and what values are important to me. The song was written from my flat in Hackney E8, and Love from E8 is based on conditional love: somebody loving you, but not whole heartedly. I want whoever is listening to realise that it is okay to ask for more, and that having high standards isn’t necessarily a bad thing when it comes to dating.

We are constantly shown in the media what love we should be attracting into our lives, but you only really find out what you need in someone through trial and error, pain and heartache. I think knowing exactly what you want in love and not accepting less is important and a part of self-love.

In your own opinion, what is the most meaningful song you wrote? What makes you say that one?

My debut single, Insomnia. I wrote it after moving out of home and moving to London alone. It was a time of depression in my life where I was finding myself and trying to figure things out independently. I like to look at life in a positive perspective so the lyric “It’ll work out, because it always works out” is like my mantra that my mum would always repeat to me when I was younger. It keeps me going through the dark times.

What personal advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue this career?

I would say the music industry is both beautiful and ugly, there is a lot of duality but if you know who you are and stay true to your values and morals then nothing can get in your way. I think as a woman there are many ways that the music industry can exploit you, especially if you don’t stand your ground, you can easily be pushed over. I do feel that the industry is slowly changing for the better as people are doing things their own way, without having so much control over them.

I would say practice self love and things that bring you peace, as this is a very vulnerable career choice. Your music is your art, and people may love or hate it. You are on show, and can be criticised, so don’t take things too personally, try and find ways of improving yourself instead of allowing negative comments to eat you alive.

What does the foreseeable future hold for you as an artist?

In the future I would like my music to inspire people, help them grow, and enable them to learn from my own mistakes. I would like the freedom to write my own music and also be an independent artist with a team of great creatives that collaborate and work together.

Anything else you would like to add?

Thank you for taking the time to read.
