Liv East Explores Love and Self Reflection on New Single ‘Projections’

Rising R&B singer songwriter Liv East returns with her latest single Projections, the fourth release from her highly anticipated debut album FUNKSOULSEX. Arriving as anticipation builds around the project, the new track sees the East London artist explore the complicated relationship between love, desire and the parts of ourselves we project onto others.

Built around a seductive fusion of funk, soul and contemporary R&B, Projections finds Liv East at her most introspective. Hypnotic vocal melodies glide over smooth basslines and pulsing drums, creating a sound that feels both sensual and understated. Beneath its hazy production, however, sits a much deeper question about what happens when we fall for someone and whether the emotions we experience are always about the person in front of us.

Speaking about the single, Liv East explains: “‘Projections’ is the first single from the album I’ve shared where I feel as though I’m really getting vulnerable and letting you into how my brain works. I think deeply and philosophically when it comes to matters of the heart, and I’ve always questioned how much of what we feel in relationships with others is just our own projections. Projections of joy, of hurt, of jealousy, of admiration etc etc. When we ‘fall’ for someone, what’s really going on? We say we’re in love, but a lot of the feelings felt with a romantic partner are oftentimes projections of self and shadow… This notion is deeply intriguing to me and makes me curious about how we can decipher what is truly ‘real’ and what is just a shadow on the wall.”

That sense of curiosity runs through FUNKSOULSEX, a debut album that promises to explore love in the modern world through a richly textured combination of funk, soul, contemporary R&B and pop. Across its emerging body of singles, Liv East has created a distinctly sensual world filled with intimacy, longing and late night desire, with Projections offering perhaps the clearest insight yet into the thinking behind the project.

The new single follows How Many Nights, Fever Dream and Sugar Rush, which have already attracted attention from WONDERLAND, CLASH and COLORSXSTUDIOS. Together, the releases have begun to reveal the sonic world of FUNKSOULSEX, while establishing Liv East as an artist increasingly comfortable with exploring the emotional and sensual territory that sits at the heart of her music.

Liv East’s story began to gather significant momentum in 2023 with her eclectic EP LVE1. Her breakout single You’re My went on to surpass 17 million streams, before she expanded into the dance world with I Miss Having Someone To Talk To, a vibrant collaboration with acclaimed French DJ and producer Folamour.

Since then, Liv East has continued to move effortlessly between neo soul, R&B and electronic music. Her growing list of supporters includes NOTION and BBC 1XTRA, alongside notable co signs from Moodymann, Jayda G, Conducta, Theo Parrish and Annie Mac. That ability to cross musical boundaries without losing her identity has become one of the defining characteristics of her artistry.

Away from the studio, Liv East has also established herself as a compelling live performer, having already played six sold out London shows. She will take that momentum to the iconic Jazz Café on October 8th 2026 for a highly anticipated headline performance.

With Projections, Liv East continues to pull listeners further into the world of FUNKSOULSEX. Sensual, philosophical and emotionally revealing, the single offers another glimpse into an artist who is not afraid to question the nature of love while creating music that makes those questions impossible to ignore.
