Rising Afrobeat artist Bidemi talks musical influences, individuality and the creative process behind his latest release ‘Ginja Me’

Bidemi

Hailing from the culturally rich and diverse Nigerian capital Lagos, Bidemi is an upcoming Afrobeat artist with a sound and vibe as ‘colourful as the continent of Africa itself.’ His approach to producing his work is remarkable as he blends the traditional sounds of African cultures with foreign influences to create something completely its own – a sonic fusion yet to be explored in the mainstream music industry.

What or who inspired you to begin a career in music?

I have always found it amazing how music can make you feel things, as early as I can remember I have always wanted to create my own. I started with writing songs inspired by the hits of the time. I can still recall writing my own version of Faze’s kolomental as well trying to make country music because that what my sister was into at the time as well as RnB music. ultimately this influences of genres are still very evident in music today.

What differs you and your sound from other artists in the music industry?

My perspective is what I think helps me stand out. My music is largely me exploring the sounds and feelings within myself as opposed to looking out at what is trending or what’s hot at the moment. I am constantly digging into myself, exploring within and trying to communicate my true self through music.

Your new single ‘GINJA ME’ is out now. Can you please describe the creative process and inspiration behind the release?

I am a huge fan of the Afrobeat genre created by Fela and I have always wanted to explore the sound for myself. I love all the things that make up the music as well as the arrangement of sounds within it. I am a big fan of Seun Kuti and how he has evolved the Afrobeat sound into something modern. That’s what I felt about his ‘Black Times’ album and I wanted to explore the Afrobeat sound but with an RnB twist. The result was Ginja me; an Afro pop, RnB and soul and Afrobeat cocktail.

Throughout your musical career, have you experienced any ‘wow’ moments?

Yes, Earlier this year I got the opportunity to open for Adekunle Gold while on tour in Australia. He’s someone I respect a lot in the music Industry as a performing artist and songwriter. It was great to associate my brand with his performance on the same stage and share a moment afterwards. It was really amazing.

What personal advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue this career?

In the words of one of my musical heroes 2face Idibia:

“If I tell you say e easy oh, na set up. So now, all you gat to do is rise up, and get up. For what you believe in, stand up. If it seems like you’re sleeping, rise up. You gat to fight for yourself. Before you find yourself by yourself with your hands up. You gotta be strong, you gotta hold on. You gotta keep keeping on”

In simple words truly it’s an uphill battle but with music the rewards are within the journey so keep going, if you’re tired rest but don’t quit.
