Independent R&B singer-songwriter PaisleighB talks the creative process & inspiration behind latest release ‘Fall Back’ + more

What or who inspired you to begin a career in music?

I always felt drawn to music, and singing. I never thought I could *actually* sing, and if you heard some of the stuff I did when I was younger, you would agree ha! I just found a joy in creating a song and it’s stuck, I’ve been bitten by the music bug!

What differs you and your sound from other artists in the music industry?

Personally, I think it’s my knowledge and passion for different genres. I like to say I have nostalgic nods throughout my music, but I’m ever evolving. I think what sets me apart is I make music that I want to hear, I don’t worry about who won’t listen, I focus on the people that do.

Your new single, ‘Fall Back’ is out now. Can you please describe the creative process and inspiration behind the release?

Fall Back is inspired by a recent heartbreak; the idea of just going through life getting hurt over and over but it’s literally the human experience. I actually had no intention of releasing this track, it was written for more therapeutic reasons – while toying with the idea, an artist (ig: @k8chilln) sent me some art work (which is now, the actual art for the single) and it just felt like the universe was screaming at me to put the song out there into the world.

In your own opinion, what is the most meaningful song you wrote? What makes you say that one?

I actually have a few; ‘Armstrong’ & ‘Never Be You’ are dedicated to an important person I unfortunately lost. I find it super hard to perform these songs live. ‘All I Need’ is a really important song to me too, it was marking the end of a chapter and showing people a little more of what I can do. Being vulnerable is something that doesn’t come very easy to me, so the reception from that song so far really has made me feel more at ease in my craft.

Throughout your musical career, have you experienced any ‘wow’ moments?

My most wow moment so far was last year – I was 1xtra track of the week and it just felt like my hard work was finally getting somewhere. I don’t have crazy funds or a team – it’s just me. Slowly, I just feel like I’m starting to create some ripples in the pond – it was a really nice moment, and keeps you going when you have those little wins!

What personal advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue this career?

Keep at it, no matter what. It feels like the most tedious thing, but the truth is, it’s all about talent, luck, timing, hard work – there’s just so so many different factors that can determine your success and how you become successful. My best advice is just always work hard, and show up for yourself. When it gets hard, remember if it was easy, everyone would be doing it – that goes for anything you do in life. When it gets hard, push back harder.

What does the foreseeable future hold for you as an artist?

Finally getting some visuals under my belt. I’ve been messed around left right and centre when it comes to getting videos back – the cons of being an independent artist, however all blips aside hoping you see a bit more of me, and continue to watch me grow and develop as an artist, as well as a person.
