South London artist Jack Swoon talks the creative process & inspiration behind his seductive new release ‘Come Over’ + more

After ten years in the industry Jack Swoon has finally decided to step out from behind the curtain to bring his sound to the forefront of the industry. Hailing from South London, this raw UK talent has a unique style of underground house blended with a melodic sensibility unique to himself.

Dubbed as “paving his own lane” by dance music royalty Pete Tong, Jack continues to bring a flavour and sound so unique that it’s resulted in the formation of his very own record label. Viberoom Records aims to give a platform to a multitude of new talent that previously may not have had a platform to shine, with the goal of building a community of like-minded music lovers of previously overlooked house music.

What inspired you to begin a career in music?

It happened gradually to be honest. I started out DJ’ing with my friends in school, then I started playing at parties which turned into nightclubs and bars, then I had my own radio show online, then I wanted to progress so music production was the next step. I guess I only really started to understand that this could be my career after my first ever trip to Ibiza with my friends. Seeing some of my favorite DJ’s playing in these amazing venues made me realise that this was their job. After that I have thought of nothing else.

What differs you and your sound from other music producers in the industry?

I’m all about the vibe of a track or song. My sound can change depending on my vibe at the time of producing it. At the moment I am still releasing music I made during lockdowns so It’s a more stripped back style from what you may hear me play in a club. Expect some more club vibes coming this year though.

Your latest release ‘Come Over’ is out now! Can you please describe the creative process and the concept/inspiration behind the track?

This was made during a time when people were forced to stay in their homes. The vocal is what came first. The poignance of the phrase ‘I want you to come over..’ is what resonated with me at the time. It was also a time when nightclubs and bars were closed so dancing was no longer something we could do and that’s why the hook “use your body” also stood out to me. The rest was just building the music around that vibe. I wanted to keep it groovy and sexy as I felt it best suited the vocal delivery.

Throughout your musical career, have you experienced any ‘wow’ moments?

It happens all the time. I try to soak up every little thing because it’s easy to take things for granted and not celebrate the little victories. You have to! Lots of little victories build up to the big ones. One that stands out has to be working with Pete Tong, he’s a legend and loved by everyone so getting to work with him and having his support on his BBC Radio 1 show is crazy to me. Life goal accomplishment.

Who would you like to work with in the future? Is there any more special collaborations coming up anytime soon?

As for producers, I would love to work with Four Tet, Caribou, bad tuner, Mild Minds, Matvei, Channel Tres, Calvin Harris, Bicep, DJ Counselling, salute…should I go on? HA! There’s so so many that I would love to be in there with and see their process. Vocalist wise Claudia Kane, Zoe Kypri, Sebastian Ade, Stevie Appleton, ALYSS, Joplyn, Khazali, Tori Letzler, SnØw… again there’s so many. I have been in the studio with Stevie already so maybe something will come from that. Watch this space.

How do you approach the sensitive task of discussing changes and rearrangements with artists?

I’m usually pretty upfront about it. I don’t think it has to be a “sensitive task” at all as this is a creative process. It’s a collaboration. Its team work. I would not be offended or sensitive about anything that someone I am working with said to me about our work.

What personal advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue this career?

Learn your craft. Work hard. Be resilient. Be persistent. That is absolutely key! Make sure you are in this because you love it. You can’t be in this because you want a quick pay day as that’s not likely to ever happen. Love what you do.

What does the foreseeable future hold for you as a music producer?

Well now I have just started my own record label (www.viberoomrecords.com) my release schedule is going to be very consistent this year. expect at least 6 releases from me and 8 total from the label. It’s going to be a really busy year.
