Emerging artist, engineer and producer Tom Did It talks the creative process & inspiration behind debut release ‘Stupid Love’

Tom Did It

Tom Did It is an emerging 20-year-old artist from Hertfordshire. Managed by DJ Ironik & Skepta’s Big Smoke Corp, he is a multi-faceted artist, engineer, and producer and has already worked with the likes of Chip, Imanbek, Sigala and Nafe Smallz – the latter of whom he recently joined on stage at KOKO in London. Sonically his music is a genre-defying mix of UK rap, upbeat club beats and chilled out indie-pop.

What or who inspired you to begin a career in music?

I wanted to start a career in music as soon as I made my first beat at 15 in secondary school. I found my love of music as a producer and engineer, then in 2020 when I learnt to write songs and use my voice I’ve never looked back.

What differs you and your sound from other artists in the music industry?

The influences of my sound are the reason my music stands out. Being raised in the countryside leaves you with few people to compare yourself with as an artist because I didn’t know anyone else who did music until I turned 19. I guess it meant a lot less pressure to be someone I wasn’t. This was helped with the likes of Michael Jackson, Amy Winehouse, Queen and Jay-Z being played around the house growing up, then during school finding and falling in love with UK and US hip hop music which left me with more than enough inspiration to start creating my own sound.

Your debut single, ‘Stupid Love’ is out now. Can you please describe the creative process and inspiration behind the release?

‘Stupid Love’ was made with my producers Sphero and Pyro alongside the first producer I ever worked with JB Made It, it was written back in June when i had just started working with Big Smoke Records and talking to major labels etc. The song echoes my feelings of excitement and belief in myself for my future in music but also how I balance exterior life problems like heart break and addiction with the music.

In your own opinion, what is the most meaningful song you wrote? What makes you say that one?

The most meaningful song I’ve written is a track called ‘Losing You’ which I wrote just after my auntie passed away and my dad’s best friend committed suicide which had both happened within a month. The song is just pure relatable emotion because I know so many people that are affected by loss, whether that be the loss of a person, pet or even a relationship.

Throughout your musical career, have you experienced any ‘wow’ moments?

The big wow moment for me was my first ever time stepping on a stage, after linking up over summer in the studio and in Marbella with Nafe Smallz. He gave me the opportunity to come out during his set of his biggest headline shows at KOKO Camden to 1500 people. This was the first time I had ever properly performed to an audience, I performed an unreleased remix of stupid love featuring Nafe and to this day that still goes down as the best experience of my life, it made me realise I really can do this! Thank you Nafe.

What personal advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue this career?

I’ve always said you have to have a sense of delusion to be in this industry, especially to be an artist. You’re never taught in school how to go and be a full time recording artist because so few people do. I compare it to being a pro footballer, but for me it’s been believing myself to the core, being my own biggest fan, cutting out all negativity and really just going tunnel vision on what I love which is making music.

What does the foreseeable future hold for you as an artist?

I’ve got my Debut EP dropping in 2024 with a couple of exciting features on there. I’m looking forward to doing live shows in the UK and hopefully across europe in the next 18 months as well as the music starting to roll out.

‘Stupid Love’ is available now via all major platforms.
