Maintaining an unstoppable momentum following her solo return with “Lover, Please Stay”, rising star Cameron Hayes is back with her latest intoxicating release, “Who Was I To Want You?” – a track that cements her position as one of Drum and Bass’ most emotive and commanding voices.
Already known for lending her stunning vocals and razor-sharp lyricism to scene heavyweights such as Wilkinson, Dimension, Sub Focus, and Notion, Hayes is continuing to redefine her artistry. This new single sees her stepping into a more empowered space, weaving deeply personal storytelling into a sound built to move both hearts and dancefloors.
At its core, “Who Was I To Want You?” is a story of release – walking away from toxicity and reclaiming self-worth. Wrapped in Hayes’ soulful tones and layered with pulsating production, it’s a cathartic anthem for anyone who has realised they deserve better. “It’s about a relationship coming to an end, with the realisation that it was toxic and unhealthy from the start,” Hayes explains. “You start to see that the feelings were never truly reciprocated, but you had rose tinted glasses on and couldn’t see quite how bad it was.”
Hailing from Reading, Hayes’ musical journey began at just six years old when she started learning piano. After earning a degree in Contemporary Music, she stepped into the spotlight in 2019 with her debut release alongside Dimension, “Devotion”. The pandemic years saw her go viral on TikTok and YouTube, amassing millions of views and building a loyal fanbase drawn to her emotional depth and unique sound – influenced by artists such as Matt Bellamy (Muse), Thom Yorke (Radiohead), James Blake, Sampha, Mitski, Little Dragon, Rufus Du Sol, and Banks.
Her momentum only grew with collaborations like “Enter Night” with Wilkinson and Sub Focus, and her 2023 EP Second Best featuring fan-favourite “Spend The Night” – which landed the cover of Spotify’s Massive Drum and Bass playlist and racked up millions of streams.
With over 624,000 monthly Spotify listeners and 83,600 YouTube subscribers, Hayes has graced major stages at Reading & Leeds, Boardmasters, Victorious (Main Stage), and Rolling Stone Beach in Germany. She’s toured extensively, supporting The Beaches across the UK and Europe, and opening for Oscar and the Wolf at London’s Village Underground.
Now, with “Who Was I To Want You?”, Cameron Hayes continues her mission to craft music that resonates on a human level while keeping crowds moving. It’s a bold, beautiful reminder that healing can be as powerful as heartbreak – and that Hayes is only just getting started.
