Singer-songwriter and producer Moniah talks individuality, musical influences and the creative process and inspiration behind latest single ‘Twin Flame’

Born and raised in South London, singer songwriter and producer Moniah (pronounced Mo-nye-yah) is an exciting addition to the UK’s Alternative R&B scene, her ethereal sound draws influences from soul and jazz. Melodic, bold and forthcoming, Moniah’s newest single ‘Twin Flame’ out Friday 18th November pulls the listener into a deep-water experiential love. The song’s dark tone is coupled with her airy and soft vocals as the synth bass pulls the listener in.

What or who inspired you to begin a career in music?

I knew I wanted to pursue a career in music when I was 8 years old. I told my family and friends when I grow up I want to be a singer. I remember being so inspired by the amazing musicians around me growing up. It was a weird variety – I liked the music my parents listened to at first: Queen, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston. And then I branched off and became interested and inspired by artists such as Ashanti, Mariah Carey, Britney Spears etc. I would say I didn’t find my music identity until I grew into my teens and really found a love in R&B. Over the years, and still, I continue to be inspired by past and new artists to pursue music and express myself in the many ways you can with music.

What differs you and your sound from other artists in the music industry?

My sound is a unique blend of R&B and alternative music. Many artists in the industry tend to gravitate towards one or the other genre but I have found myself in a niche genre. I would say my sound is a lot more risky as I respect it may not be to everyone’s taste. I enjoy listening and getting inspired from all kinds of artists from different genres. This is what influences my sound.

Your new single, ‘Twin Flame’ is out now. Can you please describe the creative process and inspiration behind the release?

My creative process tends to be quite natural: I get into my emotions and sit there and allow the lyrics and story flow through. ‘Twin flame’ and ‘soulmate’ are such popular terms to describe true love these days. I wanted to explore it because I, too, use these terms to describe someone who means the world to me. One of my biggest inspirations for my music is Nick Hakim, I love how he expresses himself musically in his songs. I had just listened to one of his releases which had me feeling heavy with emotion before I wrote the chorus to ‘Twin Flame’.

I wanted the song to be beautiful lyrically, and soft vocally but the instrumentation itself to be deep and moving. I hope all listeners that come across ‘Twin Flame’ feel like they’re in a movie. Because that is how that type of love should feel like. A ‘Notebook’ type of movie.

In your own opinion, what is the most meaningful song you wrote? What makes you say that one?

‘Human’ is the most meaningful song I’ve written because it was a real and vulnerable moment for me. I wrote it when I was heartbroken at 3am with a random musician I found on Instagram. It was strange because I was strolling through one of the musician hashtags on Instagram and landed on this talented guitarist. As he was playing, it resonated with me, before I knew it I was singing a freestyle of lyrics from nowhere. I wrote ‘Human’ in about 15 minutes – at least, the first verse and chorus. It was so easy and natural. I felt and meant every word.

Throughout your musical career, have you experienced any ‘wow’ moments?

I have been fortunate to receive credit and support from platforms such as BBC 6 Radio, BBC 1Xtra and a thumbs up from Capital Xtra presenters. When I released ‘Human’ for instance, a lot of Americans LOVED my song and I received so many shares from them and positive reviews. It was such an amazing moment to impact so many people who felt the same way I did when I wrote it. But even more amazing to gain traction from an audience across the pond!

What personal advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue this career?

You have to have thick-skin. It sounds like such a cliche but everyone’s journey is different. Some people can blow up overnight and with others, it can take years. It’s good to remind yourself what you’re doing this for and why in those moments of doubt because you’ll need to return there often to keep going. You are your biggest motivation and fan, please try and be just that and don’t abandon yourself.

What does the foreseeable future hold for you as an artist?

I will continue creating music, connecting with people around the world and striving to express myself through song. Look out for me in 2023!
