GRCO is a vibrant, bold and ambitious new talent on the Australian R&B scene. Typified by her catchy R&B hooks, effortlessly strong yet sonorous vocals and classic pop sensibilities, one can hear Toronto and Sacramento soul influences intertwined with GRCO’s own brand of laid back R&B.
She has already performed notably at Field Trip festival and the prestigious Adelaide Festival. She has also made appearances on talent shows: making the top 25 of X Factor; performing on national Italian television; and going viral as a Joe Jonas superfan on The Voice. Jonas himself was so captivated by her performance, he joined her on stage for a duet.
What inspired you to begin a career in music?
The biggest inspiration for me to begin a career in music and to ultimately continue is the possibility that absolutely anything can happen. I love the process of writing music. Of finding inspiration in the simplest of details. I always refer to artists as storytellers and that is not a title I take lightly, I wear that with pride.
What differs you and your sound from other upcoming R&B artists in the music industry?
The biggest distinction I believe is that I own my vulnerabilities. I am honest and human and this resonates in my sound. I also love to lose as much as I love to win. Failure drives me more than winning does. I am not in this game for a short time. I am here for the long haul. I am not looking to be an overnight success as I have worked too hard for that. Longevity and respect is what I am after. If my music blows up in 20 years then so be it. Everything happens in divine timing.
Your latest single ‘Petty’ is out now. Please describe the creative process and inspiration behind the release?
I wrote Petty during a dark time in my life. When I felt lost. I kept getting rejected from labels, I kept getting turned down by people I respected. I was told I had to look a certain way, lose a certain amount of weight and would be excluded from industry events. So I used that as fuel to become an independent artist. It was the biggest blessing in disguise because I fell in love with the journey of being independent. The journey of being disciplined enough to know that my success was purely mine as a result of the work I put in.
In your own opinion, what is the most meaningful song you wrote? What makes you say that one?
The most meaningful song I have written would be Legacy. I was in the studio with a talented writing team watching Gary Vee videos and The Sopranos. The song is a letter to myself and a manifestation tool I used to solidify my spot in the industry. Everyone around me was getting married, having kids but the lifestyle I have chosen for myself is one that allows me to perform and write music. Nothing will come in the way of me and my dream.
What personal advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue this career?
Block out the outside noise and voices. Follow your intuition. Become so secure in yourself and who you are as an artist because people will always try to project their opinions onto you to persuade you. Do not listen, this is your journey not theirs. Discipline yourself enough to work on music for at least 2 hours a day. Your future self will thank you.
What does the foreseeable future hold for you as an artist?
The future for me as an artist sees my career span over several decades. Several accolades under my belt but with a deep and meaningful connection with my fans. Touring the world and owning a house in the LA Hills overlooking the city. A studio in the house and weekends spent holding extravagant house parties for my family and friends.
Anything else you would like to add?
Thank you so much for your time! It was an honour!
