Hailing from the tropical shores of Anguilla: London born songstress Zipporah talks musical influences, individuality and her latest release ‘Handle It’

Zipporah

Hailing from the tropical shores of the elusive Caribbean island of Anguilla; British born, singer-songwriter, Zipporah, is leaving no head unturned with her new hit single ‘Handle It’. Melting sultry RnB tones onto vibrant Caribbean rhythms with a catchy pop refrain, Zipporah has created a distinct and unique sound.

What inspired you to begin a career in music?

I’ve always loved music from a young age. My family always joke about how when I was 5 years old, I would put on shows for everyone singing my little heart out. As I got older, I was always singing or playing different instruments. I do think I let fear stop me for a long time before I decided to pursue my love for music.

I remember singing my first Solo at a school concert when I was 18 and I got a standing ovation from the crowd. I’ll never forget the feeling and I never looked back. Pursing my love for music was all I desired from that point.

What differs you and your sound from other upcoming R&B artists in the music industry?

I think my sound is very distinct which is a result of my influences. My family is from the Caribbean, so naturally I fell in love with the tropical rhythms. But I also was born and raised in London, and Amy Winehouse with her jazzy blues has made an everlasting impression as one of my favourite artists. And when you combine that with my love for American pop icons like Michael Jackson and Britney Spears, you create this amalgamation of Pop, RnB and Caribbean elements that is so different and intriguing. And I love being able to share that with everyone.

Your latest single ‘Handle It’ is out now. Please describe the creative process and inspiration behind the release?

I was inspired to write Handle It after I was newly single and wanted to hit the danceclub. While a lot of guys would approach me, I would turn down a lot of them and just dance with my girls. Like most women, I don’t want to be man-handed, massaged, humped or roughhoused on the dancefloor.

I’m not asking for the best dancer in the room. But I’d like someone that can respect my body, my time and my energy. Ride the rhythms of the melodies with me, feel the sway of my hips and bask in the moment as we lose ourselves in each other just for tonight.

In your own opinion, what is the most meaningful song you wrote? What makes you say that one?

That’s a tough question. Every song I write has a different message. And it’s hard for me to say one message is more important than the other. What I will say however, is that in each song there is an underlying theme and that is to be unapologetically you in every sense.

If you are charismatic or shy, bold or conservative, own that and don’t let the world change you. Be authentic to yourself and your purpose.

What personal advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue this career?

My advice would be to never doubt yourself. Understand who you are, and then understand the game. Understand that you have options and follow your heart to determine which choice is best for you.

What does the foreseeable future hold for you as an artist?

Well of course I have more songs and merch coming out, so definitely look out for that. I also want to start touring this year and meeting more of my fans (aka the Boo tribe). I also have some really creative projects coming up that I absolutely cannot wait share, but all I can say is it will be epic.

Anything else you would like to add?

I’d just like to thank everyone who took their time to read this article about me. It means a lot and I appreciate that you’re interested in my journey.

‘Handle It’ is available now via Spotify and all major platforms.
