Fast-rising artist Darshae talks individuality, career advice and the creative process behind her relationship inspired debut EP ‘ME vs ME’

Fast-rising artist, Darshae has been obsessed with Beyoncé from a very young age. Growing up Darshae loved the way she dressed, sang, danced – and how she was front and centre surrounded by backing vocalists and dancers, she even attended all of her UK concerts. Darshae dreamt of emulating her success, and that’s where her musical story began.

“My mum heard me sing one day in the car along to the radio and she noticed that I had a little voice in me. Then she paid for vocal lessons, brought me to singing competitions and shows. And then it’s just been an ongoing thing ever since”

What differs you and your sound from other upcoming artists in the music industry?

I’m versatile; and if you listen to any 2 songs that I have released they are very different. Not a lot of artists can switch up their flow or musical style like that and I believe that a big strength of mine and something that makes me different from the rest of these upcoming artists.

I feel as though nobody really has the same sound as me and once you hear my tone, you can recognise that straight away… ‘yeah that’s Darshae’.

Your upcoming EP ‘ME vs ME’ is out now! Can you please describe the creative process and inspiration behind the EP?

3 out of 5 songs off the EP are already out as singles alongside music videos. Whenever I am set to release new music, my team and I come up with the vision, the creative ideas, music videos and more. It usually goes in this order: I work with my producer and we create a beat, I write onto that beat, I record it in the studio with my vocal engineer, its mastered, I discuss the visuals to go with the song, music video is filmed.

Specifically with this EP, the album is titled ‘ME vs ME’ which has a mirrored concept as you can see from the cover art. The meaning behind this one is having thoughts and battles with your own mind and heart in a relationship. Is this the right person for me? Why do I love him but hate him at the same time?

So, a lot of the songs off the EP are contrasting, some are about being deeply in love and sexual, whereas there’s others on the tracklist that basically say I’m gone and I never want to see you again.

Who would you most like to collaborate with and why?

Jorja Smith or Doja Cat. I’m very heavy on my female artists and Jorja smith inspires me simply because she lived down the road from me and she really makes me feel as though there is hope and I can make it big despite where I am from.

Doja is versatile and her come-up has been massive, I love her fashion sense and her musical style aswell. They both are artists right now that I think are killing the game.

In your own opinion, what is the most meaningful song you wrote? What makes you say that one?

A song titled ‘I’m gone’ because I wrote it when I was hurting so much and at my most vulnerable moment in my relationship. I was heartbroken, depressed and didn’t want to trust anyone ever again. So whenever I do sing it, it brings back memories and I always sing it with that extra bit of passion and emotion.

What’s the biggest problem you’ve had to overcome so far?

Finances. The music industry is expensive! So, unless you have a decent amount of money, you can’t always do what you want to do in order to get to where you need to. I have struggled with this, but I’ve had to keep pushing and working a lot so I can fund for my music.

What personal advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue this career?

Do not be afraid to fail or look silly. I took a lot of time worrying about whether people would like my music and so for a long time I didn’t release anything. We all have to start from somewhere so don’t hesitate to release music.

Also, learn about the business side to the industry before anything! Split shares, master rights and contracts. They are so important and it’s not something that is often talked about enough so take the time out to learn and understand this element in detail.

What does the foreseeable future hold for you as an artist?

Hopefully festivals this summer and I will be supporting Bobby Valentino on his UK tour this May which is exciting.

‘ME vs ME’ is available now via all major platforms.
