Born in Paris, to Russian and Congolese parents and raised in Oxford, Jen’s sonic bears influence to a multitude of cultural influences and experiences. Sitting amongst a very current R&B resurgence scene, subtle gestures to other female songstresses such as Jorja Smith, Lianna La Havas and Izzy Bizu tease through.
What or who inspired you to begin a career in music?
Creating and sharing my music has always been a passion of mine, but it wasn’t until I met my mentor Joe Porter who allowed me to see the endless opportunities I could create for myself, if was willing to put in the work.
What differs you and your sound from other rising singer-songwriters in the music industry?
My lyrics have always been important to me. I pour a lot of my personality, heart, faith and values into my music. Who I am as a person goes hand in hand with me as an artist and naturally that would result in my sound being different.
Your latest single ‘Adventure Time’ is out now. Can you please describe the creative process and inspiration behind the release?
I was at home super bored and I just kept thinking about everything I couldn’t do. This sparked my imagination and I started writing. I was certain I wanted to create a sound that was playful and fun, so I brought what I had to my band and we started jamming creating an Afro/pop fusion sound. My producer Josh Cyrus also did an amazing job of bringing the song to life and completing the vibe.
In your own opinion, what is the most meaningful song you wrote? What makes you say that one?
Hard question. All of my songs are meaningful to me for different reasons. But one that does stand out to me is called ‘Promise.’
The lyrics first started off as my vows to my future husband. It’s very personal and explores the highs and lows, that come with commitment and the sacrifice it truly takes to love. Something I think about deeply and believe is becoming more and more rare in this generation.
Throughout your musical career, have you experienced any ‘wow’ moments?
There’s been many, but I remember recently when I was in the studio recording vocals for ‘Promise’ I got really emotional. In that moment I acknowledged how far I had come and how I used to dream about being in that very position of writing and recording my own music, It felt pretty surreal.
What personal advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue this career?
You really have to love it and be willing to put in the work. I would also add to not let the industry and the chase for fame fool you into becoming something you’re not. If you don’t stay true to yourself and your art then what’s the point?
What does the foreseeable future hold for you as an artist?
I’m just super excited to get more music and creative content out in the world. I’m finally at a stage where my art is coming to life and ready for people to experience it. I also can’t wait for lots and lots more live performances.
