Exploring the cagings of social anxiety, and self-doubt: ‘Amber Lights’ is the latest release from R&B/Pop singer-songwriter Chess Galea

London based R&B/Pop singer-songwriter Chess Galea is back with her new single ‘Amber Lights’. Known for her work as a session vocalist working with the likes of Jack Savoretti on his no. 1 album ‘Europiana’, Chess has also been building a name for herself in her own right with live sessions across BBC Radio and BBC TV.

The new single ‘Amber Lights’ showcases both Chess’s ability to write music with both emotional depth and commercial appeal whilst also demonstrating her undeniable talent as a vocalist. Blending tight guitar lines, swaying beats, electronic bass and washy synths, Chess builds a vibey, melancholic R&B soundscape contrasted expertly with her direct, pop-infused vocal lines.

Speaking on the new single Chess Said:

“I wrote Amber Lights with Lily Lyons, who I met through after an all women’s virtual songwriting camp in March 2021 during the pandemic. She’s in LA (and so is my producer Jeff) and I’m in London but despite the physical distance, we still managed to create such a vulnerable and intimate song.

Amber Lights explores the cagings of anxiety, especially social anxiety, and self-doubt. Amber Lights represent that hesitation, that getting ready to go but not quite making it, that slowing down because you don’t quite have the courage or strength to be totally yourself. It’s funny because the title came before the concept of the song. I was walking home from the train station one day and passed traffic lights thinking – Hmm, Amber Lights seems like a cool name for a song…”

Born in Malta before moving to London and establishing herself as both a session vocalist and musician in her own right, Chess previously represented Malta at Slavianski Bazaar Festival in Vitebsk, one of Europe’s largest festivals with an audience of over 1 million people.

Working with Jack Savoretti on his hit, number 1 album ‘Europiana’ Chess learnt a lot about songcraft and uses it to inform her own music: “Jack had such a vision for ‘Europiana’ and covered every corner of the creative process with colour, light and inspiration. The backing vocals gave it that retro-70’s-disco feel enough to evoke nostalgia in every song but somehow it still sounds like a timeless album.”

Not only a renowned vocalist and up and coming artist but also a model, Chess has worked with the likes of Vera Wang, M&S, BERTA and Grey Goose Vodka.

Having had her music played and also performed live sessions on BBC London, BBC South East and BBC Berkshire Radio, Chess alo appeared live on BBC’s ‘All Together Now’ and has seen her career grow from strength to strength with her albums appearing on the shelves in HMV. Now looking to launch her own music across the UK ‘Amber Lights’ is the first of a number of new singles due in the coming months.

‘Amber Lights’ is available now via all major platforms.
