Rising multi-genre artist Floyd Miles talks influences, individuality and the creative process behind his latest release ‘Attract’ ft. Yung D3mz

Known for introspective lyrics rooted in divinity, relationships, and self-awareness, Floyd Miles offers an honest take on music as he uplifts, educates, and entertains listeners with his genre-fusing genius void of limitations. The Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, and producer has much to offer as a multi-genre artist.

What or who inspired you to begin a career in music?

Music has always been a part of me, although I’ve heard and I’ve been influenced by a lot of sounds along the journey, I don’t recall there being a person or moment that inspired me. I believe I was given these gifts and have learned to express myself through them. I made it a career because it came natural and everything else I did felt wrong or lacked actual purpose.

You’re a multi-genre artist, but based on your latest releases, ‘Ifemi’ and ‘Don’t Play’, how would you describe the creative space you’re in at this time? Will there be a shift in the type of music you release?

I prefer to just go wherever the music leads me. I’m usually led by the melodies so I can’t rule out anything.

What differs you and your sound from other artists in the music industry?

I think there is some great music out there. I just know my message and approach is different. I’m coming from a genuine place. The things we talk about on the regular are generally the same, but the perspective is elevated. Also, I believe being involved in every phase of my music from production, recording, mixing, artwork, etc., gives me the freedom to give a finished product that reflects who I am authentically.

Your new single, ‘Attract’ (feat. Yung D3mz) is out now. Can you please describe the creative process and inspiration behind the release?

I couldn’t find many Afro producers to collaborate with at the time, which made me take matters into my own hands. Once I got to a solid place with the beat I cooked up the song at home. As far as the message, the music led me to those lyrics. I feel that what you need will come to you. Most people tend to go wrong when they chase things that are going against them. Society teaches us that we should chase things, when in reality we should become the energy that we want to attract.

How did the collaboration with Yung D3mz come about?

The connection manifested organically. I don’t recall who, but someone tagged D3mz and I in the same tweet. From there we connected and the first song I sent him was ‘Attract’. It didn’t take long at all for him to cook up some fire.

In your own opinion, what is the most meaningful song you wrote? What makes you say that one?

That’s hard to say because they all have a different purpose. I don’t think I have released that song yet.

How does the music you’re creating now differ from what you’ve released in the past?

The only difference now is that I have a better understanding of myself as a person as well as a better understanding of my sound. Early on as an artist you can get caught up in things that people want you to do, or what you’re taught is the best thing to do instead of doing what you want to do and building that.

Although I appreciate every part of my journey and everything had a purpose, I know there are things I could’ve done differently. With everything and after time you should be getting better. I will continue to elevate and strive to do my best to influence the world in a positive way. With that understanding it has given me a new perspective and approach to my music and what I’m saying when I have people’s attention.

Singing and songwriting are two of your gifts. Have you explored other areas in music? Any interests outside of music?

I’ve recently started producing more. I’ve had a hand in the majority of my song’s production but I’ve recently been taking the lead to stay in create mode and grew to love the process even more.

Throughout your musical career, have you experienced any ‘wow’ moments?

Early on it was placements that got me excited. For example, within my first year of moving to New York I landed my first of what would lead to four featured songs with Def Jam recording artist Dave East. Now that I’ve had some time to build my sound, I’m connecting with new people that align with the message I’m bringing. That’s always a wow moment when somebody across the world can connect to a genuine expression of mine.

What personal advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue this career?

I would tell them to know themselves. You are the one who determines your value, not any platform, executive, artist, etc. Just be authentically you, not what you think you need to be. Then you’ll attract the people that align with where you want to go. You don’t have to chase what is already meant for you. Focus on using your gifts to express yourself and influence the world in the best way that you know how. And if you don’t know how, continue to seek information to learn how. In everything, practice alchemy.

What does the foreseeable future hold for you as an artist?

‘Attract’ is the second song from my forthcoming project “No Place Like Om” (NPLO).
