A producer, singer-songwriter and rapper: Introducing Ghanaian artist Edwin Paapa hMensa, known as Paapa Versa

Ghanaian artist Edwin Paapa hMensa, known as Paapa Versa, is a producer, singer-songwriter, and rapper acclaimed for his unique style and powerful storytelling. Born with a debilitating stutter, Paapa Versa turned to music as his means of expression and connection with the world. At 17, he joined Skillions New Generation, a hip-hop group founded by renowned producer Jayso, kickstarting his musical journey. In 2011, he embarked on a solo career with the release of “Solar,” produced under Skillions Records.

Paapa Versa gained widespread recognition with “Write for Me,” the standout track from his sophomore album, “Songs for Kukua.” This song received immense acclaim both locally and internationally. “Write for Me” and his entire second album was a tribute to his leaving Ghana to further his education. He later earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s in finance. In 2021, the multihyphenate adopted the stage name Paapa Versa, derived from “versatile,” and unveiled the album “Versa Villa” in February 2023 to commemorate the change.

Paapa Versa draws inspiration from diverse artists, including Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Asa, and Kirk Franklin, which is evident in his sincere and thoughtful lyrics. A gifted multi-instrumentalist, he excels in playing various instruments, notably the piano, drum kit, ukulele, bass, electric guitars, and percussion instruments. His music defies genre boundaries and is described as eclectic, insightful, and uplifting by critics.

Throughout his career, Paapa Versa collaborated with notable artists such as Ria Boss, Efya, M.anifest, and Adomaa. In addition to the Ghanaian acts he has worked with, he has collaborated with the Atlanta-based Zambian singer Makumbi Muleba.

Paapa Versa’s live performances are evidence of his artistry and versatility. Mostly equipped with his loop station and keyboard, Paapa skillfully creates intricate layers of sound, making each performance dynamic and unique. He has displayed his impressive live-performance skills several times, including the 2012 concert, A Solar Night. His recent live show, “Paapa Versa Presents Versa Villa Album Launch and Concert,” was held in February 2023.

Paapa Versa’s musical prowess has earned him numerous nominations. In 2013, he received a Discovery of the Year nomination at the Africa Gospel Music Awards. In 2021, he secured two nominations, including Alternative Song of the Year at the Ghana Music Awards (UK) and Best Alternative Song at the 3Music Awards.
