Rising artist Lavndrr talks musical influences, individuality and the creative process & inspiration behind her debut EP ‘Vibrations’

Lavndrr takes us on a journey of self with her debut EP ‘Vibrations’. Each song on this 7 track EP has its own defined sound, vibe and message. ‘Vibrations’ is a fantastic introduction to the wide ranging talent of this artist, and she sings and raps with ease. Delicate vocals underpin heavy-hitting bars – there is nothing Lavndrr can’t do.

Drawing from old school influences like The Temptations, to classic legends like Missy Elliot, to modern icons like Rihanna, Lavndrr blends these sounds and styles to create something that is authentically hers. A luscious blend of Hip Hop, R&B and Pop, ‘Vibrations’ is empowering.

While her single ‘Celebrate’ was Lavndrr’s first official release since 2014, she is excited to follow this up to new audiences everywhere. She released the music video for Celebrate earlier this year in January.

What inspired you to begin a career in music?

I have always loved music. I’ve always found songwriting as an outlet and now I’m using it to add a layer of vulnerability to my sound. I started writing poems at a young age and from there I started writing songs with friends which led me to pursue making music on my own.

What differs you and your sound from other upcoming artists in the music industry?

My sound is different, especially on this EP because I’m adding my one-of-a-kind energy with my voice, melodies and songwriting abilities, to the mix. And the topics I touch on within the songs are different as well.

I have something unique to offer and I believe people will like it when they hear it. Like I mentioned before, I bring a level of vulnerability to my music. So I think that some of the songs can empower someone that needs it.

Your debut EP ‘Vibrations’ is out now! Can you please describe the creative process and inspiration behind the EP?

So each song on the EP has a different vibe to it, hence the name ‘Vibrations.’ It touches on a bunch of topics like the mysteries of universe, love, sex and everything in between.

Some of the songs like ‘Clearer’ and ‘Reality’ I wrote to be empowering. And ‘Cards 2 Life,’ one of my friends has described it as confrontational. Which is a good thing! I always try to speak my truth on how I feel.

‘When I Dream’ is about dreaming of that special someone, meeting that one true love of your life or how it will be when you meet them. ‘Place Inside’ is about living in the moment and going inside yourself to find the inspiration and answers you need.

Are there any collabs on the new EP? How did they come about?

There aren’t any features with other artists, but there are two songs with this really cool producer, Dinn Winnwood. We actually met through a mutual acquaintance, so the universe brought us together. He is very talented! But yeah we collaborated on ‘Another World’ and ‘When I Dream.’ He sent me these amazing beats that I was able to effortlessly write, sing and rap on!

If you could collab with any artist who would it be and why?

I would say Drake because I enjoy the R&B inspired music he makes and I think we could make a dope song or two together. Is he still looking to sign a female artist? [laughs]

And I have always loved Beyoncé. I would love to collab with her because she’s always inspiring us through her music. I love ‘Find Your Way Back,’ I still play that song on repeat.

In your own opinion, what is the most meaningful song you wrote? What makes you say that one?

Cards 2 Life. Because the lyrics in this song are very real to me based on experience. People are always going to give you their opinions and tell you how to live your life, but it really doesn’t matter what they think.

People are going to assume who you are before they try to get to know you. And what did Eminem say? “I am whatever you say I am…” So yes, let them just think what they want to think about you because nobody can tell you your story.

The cover art for Vibrations was also inspired by my song Cards 2 Life as well.

What personal advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue this career?

I would say listen to your intuition and follow your heart. Because people are always going to tell you what you should do and that’s fine. Listen to it and if it doesn’t resonate with you, then let it go. But always follow what your heart is telling you to do.

What does the foreseeable future hold for you as an artist?

I definitely want to release another project or two again this year. One of them may include a collaborative project from myself and Dinn Winnwood. I’m so excited to get back in the studio!

Anything else you would like to add?

Yes – I released the music video to my single ‘Celebrate’ last month! And thank you so much for this interview!

‘Vibrations’ EP is available now ‘Vibrations’.
