Rising singer-songwriter Emilia Tarrant talks individuality, influences and the creative process & inspiration behind her latest release ‘Slow Motion’

Emilia Tarrant

It is undeniable that Emilia Tarrant is becoming fast known across the UK, from taking the stage at Glastonbury 2022 to being played on the UK’s favourite summer series Love Island. Off the back of a summer of successful live performances and tv appearances, Emilia Tarrant is back with her playful pop propensities in latest track ‘Slow Motion’, out now via all major platforms.

What or who inspired you to begin a career in music?

There was never really a moment I decided I wanted to begin a career in music, it’s all I’ve ever known I’ve wanted to do, even from a young age! I think growing up listening to lots of different music, especially of different genres, was always a super important part of my life. So once I discovered diary-like ways of songwriting, I just couldn’t stop!

What differs you and your sound from other artists in the music industry?

I think what differs me from other artists is my raw honesty in my songwriting; the most important part of music to me is connecting to an audience through lyrics! I have also loved finding my own sound in production, and making the songs contemporary, but with an Emilia flare.

Your new single, ‘Slow Motion’ is out now. Can you please describe the creative process and inspiration behind the release?

‘Slow Motion’ is a song that came from a really emotional and personal place. The song is about feeling like you’re losing someone you love, slowly over time, due to niggling issues. I remember walking into the writing session with Kingdoms and Bill Mabury with the aim of getting this emotion off my chest. I love metaphors, and the vision of ‘lying in bed, like parallel lines’, which ended up being the first line of the song, was one I absolutely fell in love with, and was a statement that set up the song pretty perfectly!

In your own opinion, what is the most meaningful song you wrote? What makes you say that one?

That’s a tough question! I would probably have to say a song I wrote recently, and is currently unreleased. It’s an incredibly raw and emotional song about the loss of friendship, which I’ve always struggled to write about, so getting this one off my chest was incredibly special. It’s set to release early next year though, so you’ll hear it soon!

Throughout your musical career, have you experienced any ‘wow’ moments?

Performing at Glastonbury for the first time this year was definitely a ‘wow’ moment! Honestly, it feels like it’ll never sink in. Having my songs played on Love Island too… even though I’ve had quite a few on there now, again, it will never feel real!

What personal advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue this career?

Stay true to yourself. It’s so important!

What does the foreseeable future hold for you as an artist?

I will be releasing my 2nd EP in the first few months of next year, which I’m super excited and proud of, and hopefully I’ll be continuing to play live a lot too!
