What inspired you to begin a career in music?

I’ve always loved music as a child. I used to practise dance routines and songs and then perform in front of the TV while my parents were trying to watch something. I loved watching Top of the Pops and MTV and I’d see artists performing or watch music videos and thought, “yeah, I wanna do that.”

Your latest release ‘Gold’ ft. Sampa the Great & 18YOMAN is out now. Can you please describe the creative process and inspiration behind the track?

It was a surprisingly sunny winter day in Melbourne. I was lying in the sun looking at my boyfriend at the time and I just remember feeling overwhelmed with love and gratitude. I was also playing some beats and loops I’d been sent by 18YOMAN and the loop that’s now Gold came on. It captured everything I was feeling: warm, vibrant, and in love in that gooey kind of way. I freestyled it up to the first chorus and I knew instantly that I wanted Sampa on the song. I showed her the demo in my car on our way back from a rehearsal and she really clicked with it. She sent me her verse the next day and it was perfect.

In your own opinion, what is the most meaningful song you wrote? What makes you say that one?

I have a song I haven’t released yet called, “Have You Been Crying?” It’s about my struggles with my mental health and how for a long time it was something I was ashamed of and kept a secret. It encourages people to speak up when they need help but is also a moment of honesty for me.

What personal advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue this career?

There will be days that you really want to quit, you’ll probably have more losses than you do wins, but that’s exactly when to keep going. Nothing can stop you if you don’t allow yourself to be deterred.

What does the foreseeable future hold for you as an artist?

More music and shows definitely, but for now I’m just taking it day by day. I’m writing and evolving and whatever I release next will hopefully reflect that.

‘Gold’ is available now via all major platforms.
