The powerful thing about art is that it provides unlimited opportunities to grow as an artist and to continually experiment with new concepts. Josh Gutierrez, who goes by the artist moniker J.Guti, is one such artist who lives by this mantra. Influenced from a young age by his parents who appreciated the arts, Josh’s love for the creativity has only grown over the years. When we first met Josh, he was just starting his journey into the formal world of art. Now, almost a year later, a lot has changed for him.
Born and raised in New Jersey, Josh continues to call the Garden State home. He is blessed to be a family man first, making his beautiful loving wife and two wonderful children his number one priority. This dedication and love comes through in his art, where his family inspires Josh on a daily basis.
While the members of his household are his main inspiration, Josh finds motivation to create through everyday life experiences. The way he views the world and the positivity he takes from events around him is transferred over to his creations. On the days where no ideas are slow in coming, Josh takes to social media, where the wealth of ideas inspires him instantly.
Even though Josh’s work is best described as urban abstract, he is passionate about all genres of art. As such he enjoys seeing and supporting the talents of others in the field. That defining approach makes Josh who he is, both as an artist and as a person; where he looks to add positivity into the world through his interaction with others and through his art. This energy is evident in the pops of bright colour and the subtle messaging in Josh’s works.
Josh has stayed true to the roots of his art, although stylistically it has changed from a year ago. Embracing change and the positive challenges that come with taking risks, Josh continually strives to get better and produce pieces that he believes are more creative. As such, he sees his growth in that his newer pieces are more detailed and clean, while still maintaining the free flowing feel of his abstract approach.
Speak, See, Hear
Not one to be limited in his approach, Josh has also been trying different mediums as his canvas, using sculptures and clothing as backdrops for his art. While it would be easy to lose momentum over the last two years, Josh has viewed the pandemic as an opportunity to focus on his craft, where he can really key in on furthering his skills and style.
Since the last feature, a lot has changed for Josh. He has been doing a number of shows, been working with galleries and he has more collectors. While some of the buyers want commissioned artwork, which can limit the creative process, Josh enjoys the challenge of thinking outside the box to meet their requests. In addition to these new opportunities, his art has been purchased in shown in numerous countries and he is starting to get into the NFT world. Josh gives all the credit to God.
Not one to depend on the status quo, Josh plans to continue to experiment and try new approaches and techniques in his art. The one word of advice he has for aspiring artists is a philosophy which he lives, namely “Don’t give a damn what people think…. just create and do you.” It is this message, this belief that is allowing Josh to make a mark and leave a footprint in the world of art.
