Norwegian songstress Marie Noreger talks inspirations, most meaningful song and the creative process behind her new EP ‘DDVS’

Even though there are no other musicians in 25-year-old Marie Noreger’s family, she is not surprised she ended up as an artist and songwriter.

Marie grew up in a creative family, her father being a photographer, and a house-dj in his younger days, her grandmother being a painter, and her aunt being a puppet maker. There was always music playing in the house, and her father taught her about obscure house-remixes from the 90s. She also attended concerts with her father from a very young age.

What or who inspired you to begin a career in music?

It was the music itself. There is nothing else as far as I know that makes me feel the same feelings when I’m in the studio making music or when I’m on stage performing it. I feel completely at one with the music when I’m singing, it’s a part of me and not an extension. That’s the reason for why I want to pursue this career!

What differs you and your sound from other artist in the music industry?

Up until now I’ve chosen to follow the sound that I love and I haven’t been driven by what’s popular at the moment or focused on putting my music in any sort of category.  I don’t really know if my music differs from others.

If I can say anything I think it is really important to follow your own sound, even if it can feel a little scary at times! Music is just another outlet to express emotions – I love when I can feel the uniqueness of an artist.

Your new EP ‘DDVS (Discodoll in the Velvet Suit) is out now. Can you describe the creative process and inspiration behind the project?

With this project I wanted to focus on the fact that everyone lives their life by virtue of who they are. It’s hard to decide by yourself in a world that is driven by concepts and expectations.

I’ve been using so much of my time overthinking and being scared of not being accepted for who I am. In the process of making this EP I set a goal to come back to that version of me that didn’t care too much and was not afraid to just be!

I’m still working on finding my balance but it was a good healing process to work on this project. This EP is also an anthem to womanhood and to celebrate togetherness. Imagine what life we could create if we could all understand each other better and see each other on a deeper level.

In your own opinion, what is the most meaningful song that you wrote? What makes you say that one?

It must be BONELESS. It is a song that encompasses three stories.

First story is about two people living a completely different life, one is homeless and the other person is “accepted” by the society. The person sits next to the homeless and she sees life from his perspective.

Second story is about a girl being in a relationship with with a man who is not looking for a home – so to say he’s not ready to settle down. He is a home to her but he feels homeless.

Third story is about two people living life like they are the last people standing. They don’t feel connected to rest of the world, time around them is moving fast but they stand still. This song carries emotions I’ve felt a dozen times and emotions, I actually think is kind of hard to explain.

Throughout your musical career, have you experienced any ‘wow’ moments?

Being nominated for a Norwegian Grammy was a pretty big wow moment for me!

What personal advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue this career?

Enjoy the ride – I remember I read somewhere years ago that you must enjoy the process .. cause when you have met your goal you will create a new one.. the process is the dream itself. It’s easy to take everything a little too seriously and we get stressed etc.. but it is so important to remember that Music is supposed to be fun and it’s something that gives you and others joy! Have fun in the creative process and trust that it will take you somewhere.

What does the foreseeable future hold for you as an artist?

More music and more concerts, and I hope to meet more amazing people on the way! I would love to do some collaborations as well. I have a warm feeling that I’m going the right direction and I’m just allowing the circumstances to guide me.

Anything else you would like to add?

I hope you will enjoy my new EP DDVS!
