Emerging Italian singer-songwriter Francesca Guerra talks individuality, inspirations and her latest emotive release ‘Summer’

Francesca Guerra

Francesca Guerra is an Italian singer-songwriter. She began her musical ventures in Rome, then moved to London where she started working on her original music project and graduated from the music university ICMP.

What inspired you to begin a career in music?

I always had a passion for music but I decided to start a proper career and bet on my talent when I was 19. At that time I just finished high school and I immediately started working with my mom as her sound engineering assistant. After a year of doing something that I wasn’t feeling connected to I took courage and admitted to myself what I wanted for my future. From that moment I never stopped pursuing my musical dream.

What differs you and your sound from other upcoming contemporary R&B/Soul artists in the music industry?

This is quite a difficult question. Nowadays there are so many talented artists that are worth listening to. I believe that I am one of them. My music is fully centred on feelings and emotions so that people can relate with their own experiences and make it the soundtrack of their daily life.

Your latest single ‘Summer’ is out now. Please describe the creative process and inspiration behind the release?

I wrote ‘Summer’ during the very first lockdown of 2020 when I was feeling lonely and trapped in my room and my own thoughts. On top of the pandemic situation that was affecting all of us, I was going through a break up. The only way of communication was video calls and texts and it was really hard to cope with the fact that I couldn’t leave my house and fix the situation. So I wrote this song as outlet of my emotions.

In your own opinion, what is the most meaningful song you wrote? What makes you say that one?

The most meaningful song for me it’s an unreleased one called ‘Happy Birthday’. In this song I talk to myself and to one of the most important people of my life. It’s about reminding yourself that if you love someone you should try to prove it to them everyday with even the smallest gestures.

Sometimes we take people for granted and that is one of the biggest mistakes because they won’t be there forever and they deserve our love and attention. I wrote this song on the day of the person’s birthday as a gift card, that’s why it’s titled ‘Happy Birthday’.

What personal advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue this career?

It’s one of the most difficult careers to purse so my advice is to go all in or don’t even start. An artists career can be demoralising and stressful sometimes but if you believe in your talent you will always find the strength to keep going. It’s a matter of time, if you are methodical and make the right steps you can reach whatever goal you have in mind.

What does the foreseeable future hold for you as an artist?

This year will be a very productive one. I planned for myself a pretty busy schedule, my main goal is to release the songs that I wrote last year and write new ones as much as possible. I’m a the very beginning of my artistic career so I’m looking forward to growing and letting myself be known by an audience and the music industry.

Anything else you would like to add?

I would like to thank all the people that are streaming my track and show interest in my music. It means so much for small artists, we make music to give emotions the right importance in people’s life.

‘Summer’ is available now via Spotify and all major platforms.
